With AI, Anyone Can Build a Website. Making It Feel Like You Is the Real Work.
Not long ago, building a website meant weeks of back and forth with a designer, a developer, and a copywriter, along with a budget that made most small business owners wince. Today a therapist, artist, or consultant can describe what they do to an AI tool over morning coffee and have a polished, working site before the cup goes cold.
The barrier that kept so many talented people offline, or hiding behind a dated page they were embarrassed to share, has nearly vanished. Anyone with an idea and an afternoon can now have a home on the internet.
But sometimes the site can be finished and still feel strangely empty, as if it belongs to no one in particular.
The other night my girlfriend said, "You always point out when a website was built by AI. Is that a criticism?"
It's a fair question, because I really do it all the time. I'll be scrolling through someone's site and say, half to myself, "oh, this was made with AI." I don't necessarily mean it as a dig. I mean, most of these sites look nice, they're clean, and everything sits where you'd expect it to. Sometimes there’s too much text or an out of place emoji. But there's a reason I notice, and it has a lot more to do with trust than with design.
When all websites start to look alike
AI is remarkably good at producing what most websites already look like. The result is a kind of polished sameness. Scroll through a handful of coaches, wellness practitioners, or interior designers who built their sites this way, and you will notice how easily their names could be swapped without anyone noticing. The words promise transformation and authenticity, but they could have been written about almost anyone.
This matters most for the people I love working with, those whose reputation has been built in person and through word of mouth. Their clients already know them as warm, specific, and a little unexpected. When a referral finally visits their website and finds generic language and stock serenity, the spell that brought them there quietly breaks.
When I see those recognizable AI fonts, the familiar formatting, and copy that's a bit more dramatic than my taste, I start to wonder whether I'm looking at a true reflection of this person's work or just the latest glorified version of it. If they had typed the same prompt on a different day, would the whole thing look and sound completely different?
That small doubt matters more than it seems. A website is often the first place someone goes to decide whether they trust you, and when it feels interchangeable, it becomes harder to believe it truly represents you.
It's deeper than a clean, pretty website
The people I work with are usually trying to uplevel something, whether that's their career, their business, or the way they show up in their field. What they want goes beyond a nice homepage. They want to feel confident introducing themselves and their work, and they want to know that if someone googled them, what they found would match the true story of who they are and what they're growing into.
This is where the ten-minute website tends to fall short. You can describe your work a million different ways, and AI will happily hand you every one of them. Each version might sound polished, and yet something feels slightly off in a way you can't quite put your finger on.
You end up doubting your own website, which is the opposite of what you wanted from it.
Where personal branding comes in
Personal branding is often mistaken for a logo and a color palette, but those are only its outward clothing. At its heart, a personal brand is the clear, honest answer to who you are, what you care about, and how it feels to work with you. It is the reason a client chooses you over someone with identical credentials.
A tool can arrange the furniture of a website, yet it cannot know the story of why you started, the phrase you always use with nervous first-time clients, or the place that shaped your taste. Those details live with you, and they are exactly what makes a visitor feel they have met a real person rather than a template.
When that clarity comes first, AI becomes a wonderful collaborator instead of a ghostwriter. You can hand it your voice, your values, and your stories, and it will help you build something faster than ever that still sounds unmistakably like you. The technology supplies the speed, and the brand supplies the soul.
Finding the words that feel true
When we take the time to work through the questions in a brand assessment (the first step of all my client engagements), something shifts. What vision of the world are you working toward? What words do you want to come to mind when someone visits your site? If money was no matter, what would you be doing? Answering in your own words brings us much closer to a description of your work that actually feels true, because it came from you in the first place.
Closing the gap between who you are and who you're becoming
The greatest outcome of this work isn't really the website. It's that you start feeling more confident introducing yourself in real life, and I name this as a goal at the outset of my projects.
In our discovery call, I ask clients to introduce themselves the way they would at a dinner party or a networking event. Then, during the brand assessment, I hear the part they usually don't say out loud at first: their big dreams for five or ten years from now. There is almost always a gap between those two versions, the introduction they give today and the future they're quietly hoping for.
The website we build is designed to begin closing that gap. We look for the ways they're already doing the thing they want to do, even in small ways, and we shape their online presence around that truth. Suddenly the future version of their work doesn't feel so far out of reach, because they can see they're already on the path toward it.
So when we finish working together, my clients don't just walk away with a new website. They feel more ambitious and more capable of creating the life, business, or whatever it is they've been dreaming about, and they can finally say it out loud.
Let your website step into the sun
The ease of building online is a real opportunity, especially for people whose talent has long outpaced their digital presence. The question is no longer whether you can have a website, but whether the one you have would make your favorite client say, without hesitation, that it sounds exactly like you.
That is the work I care most about at Lucky Gecko Studio: helping people and ideas step into the sun with clarity and confidence. If you have been meaning to refresh your site and want it to feel like coming home, I would love to hear your story. Book a call with me, and we will start with who you are and what lights you up.
Is this for you?
Not everyone needs this, and I mean that sincerely. Some people just want a quick landing page, and they'd rather have AI build it for free. That's a perfectly fine choice.
But this process is really fun, and for the right person it can be a turning point. If that sounds like you, I want to hear about what you're building.
You can fill out my brand assessment for free, and I see every response that comes through. I'll cheer you on in whatever you're working toward. If it's a match, we can work together, but more likely we'll simply stay connected and keep cheering each other on, because I truly believe we grow in community.
